Turnaround
Friends had supported and spear-headed the preservation of the park
site and has been highly active during the transformation period.
Our volunteers worked tirelessly to help create public space that
attracts and enriches users of all ages. We are proud of these
pursuits and of the public and private collaboration that made it
all possible.
It
has been highly satisfying and
validating that the Park has received recognition and awards,
grants, funding and media attention. A citywide assessment of parks
awarded the Seaside Nature Park a grade of “A” and established its
ranking in the borough’s top five performers.
We
continue to work with the NYC Parks and other agencies and groups to
effectively sustain and maintain the Park and its facilities.
IMPORTANT
EVENTS:
The
Seaside Nature Park was officially
dedicated in July 2008. On that day, NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian
Benepe announced that the children’s playground project was to be
started by Parks’ contractor in 2009.
TFI
was recognized by Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and other
officials at the playground’s groundbreaking ceremony on September
3, 2009. This children’s park area is located near the
future/proposed fishing pier and its unique design has received
national recognition. The playground will have a nautical theme and
will include sand boxes, spray sprinklers and some custom-built
equipment, such as a 20-25 foot lighthouse, ferryboat and more. It
is anticipated that this addition will be completed and operational
by fall.
In 2009 the Seaside Nature Park was
honored as November’s “Park Of The Month,” an acknowledgment by NYC
Parks that introduces some of our greatest parks and recreation
centers to curious New Yorkers and visitors alike. Visit
www.nyc.gov/parks for more information about Seaside Nature Park
and for an archive for past featured parks.
